An O.G. Skater Explains Why He Skated in the Air Jordan II
Purposely destroying sneakers for an Internet effect is one of the lamest things happening right now, but using a pair of Air Jordans as a legit pair of skate shoes is something completely different. Jimmy Gorecki, who used to skate for Aesthetics and Pharrell's Ice Cream skate team, tossed on a pair of Air Jordan IIs this past weekend and decided to give them a go at The Berrics skate park in Los Angeles.
"I've always wanted to skate in a pair of IIs but the sole and upper are pretty thin. A couple of pretty iconic skate shoes over the years were inspired by the II, so why not just skate in the original?" Gorecki says. "I've always liked the stability of mid tops and these have pretty good support around the ankle. The toe/ollie area is built with much better material than the stuff we see on Js now, so there wasn't much in terms of ripping/wear."
Gorecki wore a pair of "White/Red/Black" Air Jordan IIs from 2004. While others are skating in expensive sneakers to gain followers on the Internet, it should be noted that Gorecki has been into sneakers and street culture since the '90s and is carrying on the long tradition of people skating in non-skate shoes. And, hey, they allowed him to throw down this serious wallride.
